Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to travel to Pakistan to hear Iran's position amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and the United States. According to the White House, no direct meeting between Iranian and American officials is currently planned, but Iran's observations will be conveyed through discussions in Islamabad. The visit signals that President Donald Trump remains open to diplomacy despite continued military pressure.
The conflict escalated after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on 28 February, prompting Tehran to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. The disruption has driven oil prices sharply higher worldwide. The United States defense secretary said Iran still has an opportunity to reach a good deal by abandoning any pursuit of a nuclear weapon in verifiable ways, while also warning that maritime tensions are expanding.
Although administration officials insist they are not under pressure to end the war, the continuation of talks suggests a parallel diplomatic effort to de-escalate the conflict. Iranian officials have indicated they will also review bilateral matters and regional developments during meetings in Pakistan, raising questions about how much progress can be achieved in the coming days.
