Pentagon jumps from $225M to $55B on drones as cheap attacks overwhelm US defenses

The Department of Defense is seeking about 55 billion dollars for drone and autonomous warfare programs in its fiscal year 2027 budget, a sharp rise from roughly 225 million dollars the year before. The request reflects a major strategic shift toward deploying large numbers of lower-cost, artificial intelligence enabled systems after recent conflicts exposed how inexpensive drones can overwhelm costly air defense networks. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is also probing the theft of agricultural drones in New Jersey, underscoring concerns about the technology spreading beyond military control.

Recent clashes in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine have highlighted what defense officials describe as a growing cost imbalance, where adversaries launch waves of cheap drones that force defenders to use far more expensive interceptors. Military planners say this dynamic is pushing the United States to rethink its reliance on small numbers of high-cost platforms and instead field coordinated swarms of drones capable of operating together and saturating enemy defenses.

The funding would support a wide range of air, land, and sea systems, as well as the communications networks needed to link them. Officials aim to accelerate production using commercial technology, but challenges remain in scaling up manufacturing and integrating large numbers of autonomous systems into existing forces as global rivals expand similar capabilities.
