Disney is facing accusations of a double standard as it continues to support late night host Jimmy Kimmel after he referred to first lady Melania Trump as an 'expectant widow' shortly before an attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. The remark sparked outrage from the president and his allies, with Melania Trump publicly questioning how long the network would tolerate what she called atrocious behavior.
Critics point to Disney’s past actions against conservative figures, including the firing of actress Gina Carano from The Mandalorian, the cancellation of Roseanne Barr’s sitcom, and the departure of longtime Bachelor host Chris Harrison. In those cases, the company described the individuals’ statements as abhorrent or inconsistent with its values. By contrast, Disney has stood by Kimmel and defended its broadcast licenses amid a review by the Federal Communications Commission.
The controversy has intensified political pressure on Disney’s new chief executive officer, Josh D'Amaro, as advocacy groups and media figures line up on opposing sides. Supporters argue that punishing Kimmel would amount to government overreach and an attack on free expression, while critics say the company enforces its standards unevenly depending on political viewpoint.
