The United States military is considering deploying its new Dark Eagle hypersonic weapon to the Middle East as concerns grow over Iran's expanding missile capabilities. United States Central Command has reportedly requested the Army's Long Range Hypersonic Weapon after Iranian ballistic missile launchers were moved beyond the reach of existing American strike systems. The system has reached initial operational capability, marking the first time the United States has a land-based hypersonic weapon available for potential use.
Dark Eagle can travel at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound while maneuvering in flight, allowing it to strike targets at distances potentially greater than 1,700 miles with minimal warning. Its speed and maneuverability make it particularly effective against mobile or hardened targets such as missile launchers that are difficult to destroy with traditional weapons.
The development comes as President Donald Trump states there will never be a deal unless Iran abandons its nuclear ambitions, while broader ceasefire efforts and negotiations continue. The move also reflects a broader push by the Defense Department to accelerate hypersonic weapons development amid competition from China and Russia, both of which have already fielded similar systems.
