Israel's delegation has arrived in Vienna for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest in high spirits, despite heightened security concerns and political tensions surrounding its participation. Singer Noam Bettan and his team celebrated their departure with fans at the airport before heading to Austria, where Israel will compete in the first semifinal on May 12. Bettan expressed gratitude for the strong support he has received at home, saying he feels proud to represent his country.
Bettan will perform 'Michelle,' a multilingual, high-energy song he co-wrote with last year's Israeli contestant and other collaborators. Rehearsals are set to begin shortly, with preparations underway for elaborate stage elements. Alongside artistic preparations, extensive security measures are in place to protect the delegation throughout the competition.
Israel's participation has drawn opposition from several countries, with Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain boycotting the event and some declining to broadcast it. While audience boos are anticipated, delegation officials say Bettan is mentally prepared and determined to deliver a strong performance. Despite rule changes affecting how finalists are chosen, Israel is projected to perform well, particularly in the audience vote.
