Golan: Zionist opposition must partner with Arab party Ra'am to topple government

Yair Golan, leader of the left-wing Democrats party, has called on fellow Zionist opposition leaders to partner with an Arab Islamist party in order to bring down Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. He argued that if the opposition needs the party’s parliamentary support to replace what he described as a failed and dangerous government, then it should openly recognize the party as a legitimate partner rather than join efforts to delegitimize it.

Golan sharply criticized Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for condemning the Arab party’s role in the previous coalition and for comparing its inclusion in government to the deadly October 7, 2023 attack carried out by a Gaza-based militant organization. Golan accused Smotrich and his allies of prioritizing ideology and political power over national security, and said rejecting cooperation with Arab representatives undermines efforts to stabilize the country.

Several opposition figures, including former prime minister Naftali Bennett, have ruled out forming a coalition with Arab parties despite previously serving in a government that relied on such support. Opinion polls suggest that opposition factions would struggle to secure a parliamentary majority without backing from outside their bloc. Elections are scheduled to take place by October at the latest.
