David Attenborough, the excited but hushed voice of nature programs, turns 100

David Attenborough has turned 100, prompting a worldwide outpouring of affection for the British wildlife broadcaster whose voice has become synonymous with nature programming. Marking more than 70 years of filmmaking, he said he was 'completely overwhelmed' by the flood of birthday messages from admirers of all ages. Celebrations across Britain include special broadcasts, a live concert, museum events, nature walks and tree planting.

Attenborough’s groundbreaking series, including Life on Earth, Blue Planet and Frozen Planet, have brought both the wonder and fragility of the natural world into homes around the globe. Memorable moments, from encounters with mountain gorillas to stories of endangered species, have defined generations of natural history storytelling and elevated him to the status of a cultural icon.

In recent decades, he has focused increasingly on the urgency of environmental protection, using his platform to highlight climate change and plastic pollution. Colleagues describe him as driven by curiosity and a sense of public service, determined to use his unique voice to inspire care for the planet for future generations.
