Peru's Attorney General's Office has opened a preliminary criminal investigation into a former Israeli soldier from the Shaked Battalion of the Givati Brigade following a complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation. The Belgian Palestinian organization alleges the soldier committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide during service in the Gaza Strip. The investigation, ordered on April 28, 2026, will initially last 15 days.
The foundation claims the former soldier is currently in Peru, potentially allowing local authorities to exercise jurisdiction. The complaint was submitted through Peruvian lawyer Julio César Arbizu González. As of now, there has been no official public confirmation from Peruvian authorities regarding the proceedings.
The case comes amid ongoing efforts by the foundation, which has filed around 80 complaints in nearly 29 countries against Israeli soldiers traveling abroad. While most complaints have not advanced, proceedings have reportedly been opened in several countries, with Peru showing the clearest signs of progress beyond simply receiving a complaint.
