Facing 'epidemic of hate,' UK Jews hold Downing Street rally decrying antisemitism

Thousands rally against rising antisemitism in London

Thousands of people gathered outside Downing Street in London to protest what Jewish leaders called a growing 'epidemic of anti-Jewish hate' across the United Kingdom. Organizers estimated up to 20,000 attendees, including many non-Jewish supporters, as speakers warned that hostility toward Jews has become normalized in politics, media, universities, healthcare, and on the streets.

The rally followed a series of violent incidents, including stabbings in Golders Green, arson attacks on synagogues, the burning of four volunteer medical service ambulances, and a deadly shooting at a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur. A recent survey found that a majority of Britons view antisemitism as a significant national problem.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and other community leaders urged stronger government action and condemned social media platforms for enabling hatred. Political figures from multiple parties pledged support, while faith leaders from Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian communities signed a joint letter declaring that antisemitism is a problem for the entire country to confront.

Speakers emphasized that Jewish communities have deep roots in Britain and vowed not to be driven out by fear, despite rising security costs and growing concerns about extremism. The demonstration came amid broader political tensions following recent local election results that reshaped the national landscape.
