Senior ultra-Orthodox lawmakers reportedly rejected a political proposal two years ago that might have helped resolve Israel's long-running military draft dispute. The revelation comes as tensions rise within the governing coalition over the continued failure to pass a new conscription law.

According to new reports, spiritual leader Rabbi Dov Lando instructed members of the Degel HaTorah faction to move toward dissolving parliament, citing the stalled draft legislation. Ultra-Orthodox parties have warned they may support early elections, arguing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not secured the exemptions for yeshiva students that they seek.

Sources say senior Degel HaTorah figures, along with representatives of the Gur Hasidic faction, held quiet talks about two years ago with leaders from the center-left bloc. They were allegedly offered support for a more favorable draft exemption arrangement if they aligned politically with the center-left, but they rejected the proposal and reaffirmed loyalty to Netanyahu. With prospects for passing a draft law now seen as unlikely, the dispute is fueling renewed political instability.
