President Donald Trump has departed for Beijing for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, held amid global conflicts, economic uncertainty, and intensifying competition between the United States and China. Trump said trade and economic cooperation between the world’s two largest economies will be the primary focus of the talks.
Trump aims to persuade China to increase purchases of American goods, including agricultural products and aircraft, and to explore the creation of a 'Board of Trade' to prevent future disputes following last year’s tariff conflict and China’s restrictions on rare earth minerals. Beijing is expected to push for relief from American technology restrictions and a reduction in tariffs.
Taiwan is also set to feature prominently in discussions. China opposes American weapons sales to the island, which it considers part of its territory, while Taiwan’s semiconductor industry has become vital to global artificial intelligence development. Broader geopolitical tensions, including instability in the Middle East and a potential three-way nuclear arms agreement involving the United States, China, and Russia, may also be raised during the visit, though Trump said Iran would not dominate the agenda.
