Air Force intel vet allegedly spiraled into Iran's terror underworld: Timeline of deceit, hunt for spy suspect

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a 200,000 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of former United States Air Force intelligence specialist Monica Witt, who is accused of defecting to Iran and providing classified national defense information. Federally indicted in 2018, Witt allegedly supplied sensitive intelligence to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after years of service in highly classified counterintelligence roles.

Witt enlisted in the Air Force in 1997 and later became a special agent and counterintelligence officer with access to sensitive compartmented programs, including the identities of intelligence sources and operational details. After leaving active duty in 2008, she continued working as a government contractor while pursuing graduate studies in Middle East studies. Authorities say she became increasingly critical of United States policies before traveling to Iran in 2012 for an anti-Western conference, where she publicly denounced the United States and converted to Islam on state television.

Prosecutors allege that Witt worked with an Iranian media figure who acted as a recruiter, helping her establish credibility with Iranian intelligence officials. By 2013, she had permanently relocated to Iran, where she is accused of revealing classified program code names and assisting in developing targeting materials against former colleagues in United States intelligence.

According to the indictment, Witt later helped Iranian hackers conduct cyber operations against United States intelligence personnel, including efforts to deploy malicious software to monitor and compromise their computers. She faces charges including espionage, conspiracy, computer intrusion, and identity theft, and authorities say efforts to locate and apprehend her remain ongoing.
