A San Diego County man has been charged with a federal hate crime for allegedly assaulting a Jewish man during an anti-Israel demonstration outside a synagogue in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles. Prosecutors say the 28-year-old traveled to the protest, which targeted an event promoting the sale of real estate in Israel, and punched the victim in the jaw as he walked near the synagogue, causing pain and swelling.

According to the indictment, the suspect later posted about the assault on social media, sharing images and messages boasting about the attack and using antisemitic language. He is accused of celebrating the violence in private messages and public posts in the days following the incident.

The protest drew clashes between demonstrators and counterprotesters, with reports of pushing, shoving and the use of bear spray. Political leaders condemned the violence, and federal authorities launched an investigation. If convicted, the defendant faces up to 10 years in prison.
