Somaliland's first-ever embassy anywhere will open in Jerusalem, envoy says

The Republic of Somaliland announced it will open its first-ever embassy in Jerusalem, marking the first diplomatic mission the self-declared state has established anywhere in the world. Somaliland's ambassador to Israel said the move reflects growing friendship, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation, while Israel will also open an embassy in Hargeisa. Israel's foreign minister welcomed the decision as a significant step in strengthening ties.

Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland in December, decades after the territory declared independence from Somalia in 1991. Despite maintaining its own currency, passport, and army, Somaliland has struggled to gain broad international recognition due to concerns about destabilizing Somalia and encouraging separatist movements elsewhere. Israel's recognition prompted international criticism.

Somaliland's strategic location in the Horn of Africa, across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen, has added to its importance for Israel, particularly amid regional tensions involving Iran-backed Houthi forces. Somaliland will become the eighth country to establish an embassy in Jerusalem, while most nations continue to keep their embassies in Tel Aviv pending a final agreement on the city's status between Israel and the Palestinians.
