Dems score win as GOP senator helps advance Iran war powers resolution

A Senate resolution seeking to limit President Donald Trump's war powers in Iran cleared a key procedural hurdle after several Republicans joined Democrats in support. Senator Bill Cassidy, who recently lost his primary election, provided a pivotal vote, alongside Senators Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Susan Collins. The move marks the first time Democrats have successfully advanced the measure after multiple failed attempts.

The resolution aims to force congressional debate and oversight after lawmakers missed a sixty day deadline to authorize or halt military involvement. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer argued that the president has not made progress toward ending the conflict or reducing risks to United States troops. Despite the breakthrough, supporters still face significant obstacles, including the likelihood of a presidential veto.

The vote comes as the administration signals readiness to take military action if negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program collapse. Vice President JD Vance stated that while the administration prefers a diplomatic solution, it is prepared to act if necessary. Lawmakers are expected to continue pursuing additional war powers votes in the coming weeks.
