Israel's Negev Desert has been officially recognized as an international wine region, earning protected geographical indication status under the label 'Negev.' The designation follows a four-year initiative led by the Merage Foundation Israel and is based on research highlighting the distinct characteristics of wines produced in the desert region.
Stretching from Kiryat Gat to Eilat, the Negev becomes Israel's second internationally acknowledged wine region, joining other renowned areas such as Champagne, Chianti, Bordeaux, and Napa Valley. Supporters say the recognition underscores the uniqueness and quality of wines produced under challenging desert conditions.
The region is home to more than 60 wineries that collectively produce over one million bottles annually. Industry leaders believe the new status will strengthen the global standing of Israel's wine sector while boosting tourism and economic growth in the Negev.
