How Kamala Harris sank: Democrats admit 2024 went horribly wrong but have no roadmap for 2028

The Democratic Party has released a 192 page internal review examining Kamala Harris's defeat to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, exposing deep divisions within the party. The report concludes that Democrats were disconnected from working class voters, struggled to deliver a convincing economic message, and lost credibility on immigration, public safety, and inflation. Despite raising about 1 billion dollars in just over three months, the Harris campaign failed to overcome voter dissatisfaction and perceptions of elite detachment.

However, the review has drawn criticism for what it leaves out. It avoids sustained scrutiny of former President Joe Biden's decision to seek re election despite concerns about his age, as well as the chaotic process that led to Harris becoming the nominee without a competitive primary. It also largely sidesteps internal party tensions over support for Israel's war in Gaza, an issue that alienated many younger and progressive voters.

The document, released with a disclaimer from the party's national leadership acknowledging its shortcomings, underscores a broader identity crisis. Establishment figures argue the party needs sharper messaging and organization, while progressives contend that deeper cultural and structural problems persist. As Democrats look toward the 2026 midterm elections and beyond, the report makes clear they remain divided over whether the 2024 loss was circumstantial or a sign of a more fundamental disconnect with large segments of the electorate.
