A former Argentine prosecutor who initially investigated the 2015 death of special prosecutor Alberto Nisman has been formally charged with obstructing justice. Viviana Fein was indicted for aggravated concealment over her handling of the probe into Nisman's death, a case that has deeply unsettled Argentina's Jewish community and drawn international scrutiny.
Nisman had been appointed to investigate the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, which killed 85 people. He was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot wound just hours before he was due to present evidence to lawmakers accusing then president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and other officials of covering up Iran's alleged role in the attack.
Fein originally ruled Nisman's death a suicide, later suggesting he may have been forced to take his own life. However, a 2017 forensic report concluded that he was murdered. The judge overseeing the case said Fein failed to secure the crime scene, allowing numerous people to enter and exit the apartment, potentially compromising key evidence. She faces up to three years in prison if convicted and denies wrongdoing.
The charges come as Argentina's current government has taken a stronger stance against Iran and Hezbollah, officially holding them responsible for both the 1994 community center bombing and the 1992 attack on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, and advancing efforts to try Iranian suspects in absentia.
