Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation to block individuals connected to the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol from accessing a newly created $1.8 billion fund within the Department of Justice. The proposal, titled the 'No Rewards for January 6 Rioters Act,' would prohibit anyone convicted in relation to the riot from receiving compensation, including those later pardoned.
The measure follows the creation of the Department of Justice's 'Anti-Weaponization Fund,' established as part of a settlement between President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service. Some attorneys representing January 6 defendants have indicated they plan to seek payouts that could range from $1 million to $5 million for alleged damages such as lost businesses, prison time, and legal costs.
Democrats argue the fund should not be used to compensate individuals involved in the Capitol attack. The fund has also drawn legal challenges from two police officers who defended the Capitol, who filed a lawsuit seeking to block what they described as a taxpayer-funded slush fund that could benefit riot participants.
