Trump turnaround: Open the straits, close the war

After weeks of military escalation alongside Israel, President Donald Trump appears to be shifting from demands of 'complete and total surrender' by Iran to a more limited objective focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and stabilizing global energy markets. Early ambitions of forcing regime collapse in Tehran or dismantling Iran's nuclear infrastructure have reportedly been set aside amid growing economic and diplomatic pressure.

Trump announced that an agreement to reopen the strategic waterway has largely been negotiated between the United States, Iran, and other countries, with final details still under discussion. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for nearly one fifth of the world's oil supply, had faced heightened tensions following the recent military campaign.

While officials in Washington suggested the deal could include Iranian concessions on uranium stockpiles and maritime access, Iranian state-linked media denied making such commitments. Diplomatic reports indicate the emerging framework may involve partial sanctions relief, access to frozen Iranian assets, and phased maritime reopening in exchange for renewed discussions over Iran's nuclear program.
