A nationwide study led by Wolfson Medical Center and researchers from the Health Ministry reviewed all hysterectomies performed in Israel between 2005 and 2021, analyzing a total of 89,000 procedures. Published in the scientific journal Maturitas, the research provides the first comprehensive national overview of how the surgery has evolved over nearly two decades.
The findings show a clear decline in the overall rate of hysterectomies relative to population size. At the same time, there has been a significant reduction in open abdominal surgeries, with a growing preference for minimally invasive techniques.
Laparoscopic procedures, which involve smaller incisions and typically allow for faster recovery, have become increasingly common. The study highlights a major transformation in surgical practice in Israel, reflecting broader global trends toward less invasive gynecological care.
