United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly condemned Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem for threatening to overthrow Lebanon's democratically elected government. Rubio described the remarks as reckless and accused the group of ignoring repeated appeals from Lebanon's legitimate authorities to halt its attacks and respect a ceasefire.
According to Rubio, Hezbollah has continued firing on Israeli positions and moving fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon. He said these actions are part of a deliberate effort to destabilize the country and preserve the group's power at the expense of the Lebanese people.
Rubio emphasized that the Lebanese government is working to rebuild and stabilize the country with full support from the United States, while Hezbollah is attempting to drag Lebanon back into chaos. He asserted that threats of violence and overthrow would not succeed and that the period in which a militant group held the nation hostage is nearing its end.
Qassem delivered his speech on Resistance and Liberation Day, marking the anniversary of the Israel Defense Forces withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000. During his address, he vowed that Hezbollah would not disarm and praised the group's recent drone attacks against Israeli forces.
