The International Federation of Association Football has confirmed that Iran's national team will move its World Cup base camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, following escalating military conflict between Iran and the United States. The conflict began on February 28 after joint strikes by the United States and Israel killed Iran's supreme leader, prompting retaliatory attacks and disrupting Iran's tournament preparations.
Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj said the request to relocate the base was approved after meetings with tournament officials. The team will now be hosted at the Centro Xoloitzcuintle in Tijuana, near the border but within Mexican territory. Mexico's president Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that her government agreed to host the team.
The change comes just 17 days before the World Cup begins, with the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Although Iran will base itself in Mexico, all three of its group stage matches are scheduled to be played in the United States, where security planning had already been underway before the relocation was finalized.
