American military forces carried out what officials described as preemptive and defensive airstrikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and boats that were allegedly attempting to lay mines. United States Central Command said the action was taken to protect American troops, adding that operations were conducted with restraint despite an ongoing ceasefire.
Iranian state media reported that two naval vessels belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were struck in the Persian Gulf, resulting in the deaths of four personnel. Additional explosions were reported in the port city of Bandar Abbas.
The strikes come as Washington and Tehran continue negotiations aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program. President Donald Trump said any final agreement would require the Atomic Energy Commission to witness and verify the destruction of Iran’s enriched uranium, either by transferring it to the United States or dismantling it under international supervision.
While both sides have signaled progress toward a framework that would require Iran to relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, officials indicated that final approval of the memorandum of understanding could be delayed due to procedural steps in Tehran.
