North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles towards East Sea

North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Wednesday, according to South Korea's military, a day after an earlier projectile was detected from the Pyongyang area. The missiles were launched from the Wonsan area and traveled about 240 kilometers. It marked the North's fourth known ballistic missile test this year.

The launches came shortly after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung expressed regret over civilian drone incursions into the North earlier this year, calling the operation irresponsible. Analysts view the missile tests as a rejection of Seoul's recent efforts to improve inter-Korean relations.

South Korea's presidential security council convened an emergency meeting and urged Pyongyang to halt what it called provocative actions that violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. While Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, described Lee's expression of regret as wise, a senior North Korean official reiterated that the South remains the enemy and dismissed positive interpretations of her remarks.

The developments unfold amid broader geopolitical tensions, including comments by United States President Donald Trump about his relationship with Kim Jong Un and the presence of American troops in South Korea. Experts say the latest missile launches signal that Pyongyang remains firm in its hardline stance despite diplomatic overtures from Seoul.
