Israel kicks off 78th Independence Day festivities with annual torch-lighting ceremony

Israel marked its 78th Independence Day with the annual torch-lighting ceremony at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, returning to a live audience after two years disrupted by war and wildfires. The event unfolded amid fragile ceasefires with Iran and in Lebanon, with the official theme 'Forces of Renewal' highlighting resilience during ongoing regional conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking in a pre-recorded address, praised Israel’s recent military campaigns against Iran, Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and operations in Syria. He said Israel had strengthened its regional standing, deepened ties with the United States, secured the return of all hostages from Gaza, and established security zones along its northern borders. His remarks focused on military achievements and national resolve.

Torch-lighters included senior military officers, wounded soldiers, relatives of victims and former hostages, medical professionals, cultural figures, and community leaders. Argentine President Javier Milei became the first foreign leader to light a torch, drawing strong applause. The selections sparked some controversy, and a seating dispute involving National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir briefly drew attention.

In Tel Aviv, thousands attended an alternative ceremony organized by government critics, who called for accountability over the October 7 attack and demanded an independent state commission of inquiry. The parallel events underscored ongoing political divisions even as the country commemorated its independence.
