Multiple swastikas were spray-painted overnight on synagogues, homes, and Jewish sites in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens, New York City, an area with a large Jewish population. The vandalism included graffiti on the Congregation Machane Chodosh synagogue and on a nearby home garage.
One swastika was defaced on a cornerstone dedicated to survivors of Kristallnacht, the 1938 Nazi pogrom against German Jews widely seen as the beginning of the Holocaust. Additional graffiti reading 'Heil Hitler' was reported at the Rego Park Jewish Center.
Local officials said several homes and synagogues were targeted. City Council Speaker Julie Menin said residents and worshippers were met with 'terrifying signals of hatred and threats of violence' when they arrived at their properties and places of prayer.
