The Federal Bureau of Investigation said a gunman who killed three people and wounded 15 others at an Austin bar in March acted alone and was not directed by a foreign terrorist organization. Investigators said the attacker, Ndiaga Diagne, 53, may have been motivated by 'specific personal triggers and grievances' related to the Iran War, though they have not identified conclusive evidence explaining his choice of target.
Authorities said Diagne wore clothing displaying an Iranian flag and the phrase 'Property of Allah' during the attack and admired Iran’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The shooting occurred about a day after the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, prompting speculation about his motives.
Diagne, a naturalized United States citizen originally from Senegal, legally purchased the handgun and rifle used in the attack in 2017. He had no prior investigations by federal authorities and no confirmed ties to extremist groups.
Court and law enforcement records show a history of personal turmoil, including allegations of domestic violence, a finalized divorce in which he lost custody of his children, and a reported mental health crisis call in 2022. Officials said the investigation remains unable to fully determine what drove him to carry out the attack.
