Muslim American organizations are condemning recent congressional hearings led by Republican lawmakers that focus on making the United States 'sharia-free,' arguing that the proceedings unfairly target and stigmatize Muslim communities. The hearings, held by a House Judiciary subcommittee, were framed by supporters as a defense of the Constitution against political Islam. Critics say they promote fear and revive harmful stereotypes despite a lack of evidence that mainstream Muslim groups seek to impose sharia law in the United States.

The United States Council of Muslim Organizations accused lawmakers of weaponizing government institutions against Muslim Americans and engaging in what it described as politics rooted in fear. The Council on American Islamic Relations said the hearings portray Muslim Americans as outsiders and undermine religious freedom. Democratic lawmakers also criticized the proceedings, calling them a distraction and an attack on constitutional protections.

Civil rights advocates point to a broader rise in anti-Muslim sentiment in recent years, linking it to past terrorist attacks, immigration debates, white supremacist rhetoric, and tensions related to the war in Gaza. The Council on American Islamic Relations reported a record number of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab complaints in 2025, while a separate study found a surge in anti-Muslim rhetoric by Republican elected officials. Republican governors in Florida and Texas have labeled the Council on American Islamic Relations a terrorist group, an accusation the organization strongly denies.
