'Peace can't be piecemeal': India voices concern over Strait of Hormuz, Gaza at BRICS conclave

India expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in West Asia during a high-level meeting of emerging economies, warning that instability threatens global energy supplies, maritime security and economic stability. External affairs minister S Jaishankar stressed that safe and uninterrupted navigation through key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea is essential for global well-being.

He highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and reiterated India’s support for a sustained ceasefire, humanitarian access and a two-state solution to address the Palestine issue. Jaishankar also pointed to ongoing challenges in Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Yemen and Libya, emphasizing that stability cannot be selective and that peace cannot be piecemeal.

Calling for respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, he underlined that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable solutions to conflict. He cautioned against unilateral coercive measures and sanctions that he said disproportionately harm developing nations and undermine international law.

Jaishankar further addressed the persistent threat of terrorism, the need for climate justice, and concerns over technological inequality. He also renewed India’s push for reforms of the United Nations Security Council, arguing that strengthening multilateralism is essential to building a more stable and inclusive global order.
