UAE tried, failed to persuade fellow Gulf states to attack Iran together early in war - report

The United Arab Emirates attempted to persuade fellow Gulf states to join a coordinated attack on Iran shortly after the United States and Israel began their military campaign, according to a report. President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed reportedly spoke with regional leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, but failed to secure their support.

The lack of backing may help explain recent tensions between the Emirates and other Gulf nations, including its recent decision to withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The report also states that Saudi Arabia carried out a strike against Iran in March but soon shifted toward supporting mediation efforts led by Pakistan, a process in which the Emirates was reportedly frustrated not to have a larger role.

Qatar also considered retaliation after Iran struck its Ras Laffan gas facility, the largest of its kind globally, but ultimately chose not to respond militarily. The administration of President Donald Trump was said to be aware of the Emirati push for a joint response and had hoped Saudi Arabia and Qatar would participate.
