Israel's prison authorities have denied allegations that activists detained from a Gaza-bound flotilla were abused, stating that all 430 detainees were held in accordance with the law and received necessary medical care. The activists were arrested after Israeli forces intercepted 50 ships in international waters to enforce the blockade on Gaza.
Organizers of the flotilla claim that several detainees were hospitalized with injuries and that at least 15 activists reported sexual assaults, including rape. Reuters said it was unable to independently verify the accusations. Germany described some of the claims as serious and confirmed that some of its nationals were injured, while prosecutors in Italy are investigating possible crimes, including kidnapping and sexual assault.
The allegations have increased international pressure on Israel, especially after a video showed National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir mocking detained activists. Italy said European Union members were discussing potential sanctions against him.
