At least two gunmen were shot dead and another was severely wounded after opening fire outside the building housing the Israeli consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday afternoon. The attack took place in the city’s financial district and led to a gun battle that lasted several minutes, prompting a heavy police response and a temporary lockdown of the surrounding area.
Video footage showed officers taking cover behind vehicles while exchanging gunfire for nearly ten minutes. Authorities later found the bodies of two attackers near grassy areas close to the consulate building. The assailants were reportedly armed with automatic rifles and handguns, dressed in camouflage clothing, and carrying backpacks.
Two police officers were injured during the confrontation. Officials confirmed that no diplomatic personnel had been present at the consulate for the past two and a half years. The motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigators continue to examine the scene and maintain security cordons around the busy business district.
