US-Iran direct talks begin in Pakistan amid disputes, distrust - The Times of India

The United States and Iran have begun rare face-to-face negotiations in Pakistan as their conflict enters its seventh week, following a fragile two-week ceasefire. The talks mark an uncommon instance of high-level direct engagement between the two governments since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Pakistan is hosting and facilitating the discussions after holding separate meetings with both delegations.

The United States delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance, while Iran's team is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. The discussions are focused on stabilizing and advancing the ceasefire, which remains under strain due to ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon and deep disagreements between the sides. Iran had set preconditions for the talks, including a reduction in Israeli military actions.

Iran has reiterated key demands, describing parts of its proposal as 'red lines', including compensation for damage caused by joint United States and Israeli strikes that triggered the war in late February. Regional officials from China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are also present in Islamabad to indirectly support the sensitive negotiations, underscoring the high regional and global stakes involved.
