A new report reveals a sharp rise in emotional and physical distress among Holocaust survivors in Israel since the outbreak of the 'Swords of Iron' war in October 2023. Data from an emotional support organization and the Foundation for the Welfare of Holocaust Victims show that more than 11,600 distress calls have been received, with roughly one-third recorded during Operation 'Roaring Lion'.
The findings also indicate that around 50 survivors were harmed in their homes during the campaign against Iran, while many others continue to experience intense fear due to inadequate access to shelter during air raid sirens. Widespread loneliness and helplessness have been reported, particularly during emergency situations.
Economic hardship is compounding the crisis. Thirty-six percent of survivors require help purchasing basic food, and 27 percent have had to forgo food because of financial or mobility challenges. More than 70,000 survivors, representing 65 percent of the total, live alone, and 75 percent are classified as needing nursing care.
