Why only Arleigh Burke-Class US destroyers can lock down Iran's Hormuz for Trump

The United States Navy has announced plans to impose a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz as the West Asia conflict enters its forty fifth day. The narrow waterway, through which nearly one fifth of global oil and gas supplies pass, is critical to the global energy market. After peace talks failed, President Donald Trump ordered the blockade of Iranian ports and the strait to pressure Tehran.

Leading the operation are Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers, widely regarded as the backbone of the United States surface fleet. With more than seventy active ships and many more under construction, they represent the largest class of major surface combatants in the world. Two of these destroyers have already been deployed to the strait to begin enforcing the blockade.

The ships are considered uniquely suited for the mission because they combine speed, firepower, endurance, and advanced defensive systems. Armed with ninety six missile launch cells, anti submarine weapons, helicopters, and emerging laser defenses, they can counter threats from air, sea, and underwater forces. Their extensive combat experience in regional conflicts further reinforces their role as the primary instrument for projecting American naval power in both war and peace.
