Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever met with leaders of the country’s Jewish community to address rising antisemitism and a worsening climate of hostility toward Jews in Belgium. The talks come as the government has deployed military forces outside Jewish institutions following increased threat levels and fears of possible attacks in Europe.
Participants discussed the need to strengthen protections and political support for Jewish citizens. Michael Freilich, a member of parliament and special envoy of European Jewish organisations, welcomed the prime minister’s personal involvement and commitment during what he described as difficult times.
A key topic was the proposed appointment of a special envoy to combat antisemitism, which would require backing from coalition partners. Until such an appointment is made, De Wever pledged to serve in that role himself. He also confirmed that he will deliver the keynote address at the annual Holocaust deportation memorial in Antwerp on May 6.
