In Jerusalem, young composers partner with bereaved families to create musical memories

In Jerusalem, the Youth Creating Memory project brings together young musicians, poets, and bereaved families to compose original songs honoring loved ones killed since October 7, 2023. Founded by musician Itamar Shochat through the Jerusalem branch of the Tarbut Movement, the initiative seeks to offer solace and preserve personal stories through music in the wake of widespread violence and loss.

Each project pairs two musicians and a poet with a family, who share memories, writings, and musical preferences of the person they lost. The team then works closely with them to craft lyrics and melodies that reflect the individual’s life and spirit. The finished songs are arranged and performed by youth ensembles from Jerusalem schools, allowing students to engage deeply with the stories behind the music.

After every five songs are completed, they are compiled into a short album that spans diverse musical styles shaped by each family’s background and grief journey. For many relatives, the songs have become central to memorial gatherings and public talks, offering a meaningful way to remember their loved ones and keep their voices present within the community.
