The Mediterranean Sea is warming at an accelerated pace, according to a new government report, raising concerns about the rapid spread of invasive species and the growing presence of plastic pollution. Scientists warn that rising temperatures are reshaping marine ecosystems, allowing non-native species to thrive and disrupt local biodiversity.
The report highlights an increase in marine litter, particularly plastics, though it notes that the proportion of plastic bags found on beaches has declined. Invasive species continue to expand their range, taking advantage of warmer waters and placing additional stress on native marine life.
Despite these troubling trends, researchers identified localized signs of improvement. Water quality has improved in southern Haifa Bay, and a previously declining sea snail species is showing signs of recovery. The monitoring program behind the findings is led by government environmental and energy authorities, although the position of Chief Scientist at the Environmental Protection Ministry remains unfilled.
