Hezbollah's deployment of low-cost fibre-optic drones in southern Lebanon is creating new challenges for Israeli forces, forcing the military to rapidly adjust its tactics. The small, inexpensive devices, described by researchers as resembling children's toys, are tethered to operators by thin fibre-optic cables and piloted using first-person view systems. Their design allows them to evade traditional electronic disruption methods, making them harder to detect and intercept.

Unlike conventional drones that rely on satellite navigation or radio signals, these tethered devices cannot be easily jammed. Their speed, precision and minimal training requirements enable Hezbollah to strike Israeli targets effectively while keeping costs relatively low. Experts say the shift signals a broader move toward asymmetrical warfare, with Hezbollah increasingly relying on such drones instead of large-scale rocket barrages.

Israeli military officials acknowledge they are still adapting to the evolving threat, using protective barriers and other defensive measures developed from past conflicts. They are also studying lessons from other war zones where similar drone tactics have become widespread. The conflict, which escalated in early March, has led to heavy casualties, extensive airstrikes and a ground offensive, even as temporary ceasefire efforts and rare direct talks between Lebanon and Israel continue.
