A woman in the United States has received a Jewish divorce document after a three year struggle, following financial sanctions imposed on her husband by Israeli rabbinical authorities. The couple had lived in Florida for over a decade before separating in 2023, but the husband refused to grant the divorce despite a rabbinical order, instead demanding increasing financial compensation.
Seeking assistance, the woman turned to a legal aid organization that supports women unable to obtain religious divorces. An attorney petitioned the Haifa Rabbinical Court to place liens on the husband's assets in Israel, including bank accounts and real estate, after he obstructed earlier arbitration efforts.
As pressure mounted and additional measures such as receivership proceedings were initiated, the husband relented just days before a scheduled court hearing. He appeared before a rabbinical court and agreed to grant the divorce, allowing the woman to move forward with her life.
