Trump says US-Iran ceasefire on 'life support'; calls Tehran's latest proposal 'piece of garbage'

The ceasefire between the United States and Iran is under severe strain after President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s latest response to a proposal aimed at restarting negotiations. Trump described the agreement as being 'on life support' and dismissed Iran’s reply as a 'piece of garbage', saying he did not finish reading it. The truce, in place since April 8, had paused a 10 week conflict but now faces renewed uncertainty.

Iran’s response reportedly included demands such as compensation for war damage, recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, an end to the United States naval blockade, guarantees against future attacks, lifting of sanctions and the removal of restrictions on its oil sales. Iranian officials said these were not concessions but the country’s legitimate rights, accusing Washington of taking a one sided approach.

Washington had proposed halting hostilities before moving to broader negotiations, including discussions about Iran’s nuclear programme. Iranian officials defended their position, calling for an end to the war, the lifting of the blockade and the release of frozen assets, while also seeking security guarantees for the region and Lebanon.
