Florida plans to close the federal migrant detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz, according to a report citing a federal official and others familiar with the facility. Vendors were informed that detainees would be transferred by the start of June, and the 250 million dollar facility will be dismantled in the following weeks.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the agency is continuing to evaluate detention needs and operational requirements, denying reports that it is pressuring the state to shut down the site. The governor's office did not immediately comment.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement held an average of about 1,400 detainees at the remote facility between October and early April. Advocates have criticized conditions there, citing constant lighting, limited access to medicine, and difficulties obtaining legal counsel due to its isolated location in wetlands west of Miami.
