Representative Josh Gottheimer sharply criticized The New York Times over a column alleging systemic sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners, including claims that dogs were used in assaults. He accused the newspaper of amplifying sources tied to Hamas and suggested the outlet was acting as if it were on the group's payroll. Gottheimer argued that the publication failed to adequately highlight documented sexual violence committed by Hamas during the October 7 attacks.
The report, written by columnist Nicholas Kristof, cited accounts from 14 individuals who alleged sexual abuse by Israeli settlers or security forces. The Israeli Foreign Ministry condemned the article as a severe false accusation and part of a broader campaign to discredit Israel internationally. Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also objected, saying his comments were mischaracterized and that he did not validate the article's most serious claims.
The New York Times defended Kristof's reporting, describing him as an experienced journalist on issues of sexual violence in conflict zones. A spokesperson said the article was based on firsthand reporting and independent studies, and maintained that Olmert's remarks were accurately presented and properly contextualized.
