UAE spooked? Fearing Gulf chaos, Abu Dhabi joins Saudis, Qatar in urging Trump against fresh Iran war

The United Arab Emirates has joined Saudi Arabia and Qatar in urging United States President Donald Trump to avoid renewed military action against Iran, pressing instead for diplomacy to prevent another regional war. Gulf leaders warned that further conflict would trigger retaliation from Tehran, destabilize their economies and undermine their image as secure hubs for trade and energy.

The shift is notable for Abu Dhabi, which had taken a more confrontational stance toward Iran after suffering heavy damage during recent fighting. During the conflict, Iran and allied militias launched drones and missiles across the Gulf, causing deaths and billions of dollars in damage to ports and energy infrastructure. A ceasefire was reached in early April, and both sides are now exploring a possible agreement through mediation led by Pakistan.

Despite tentative diplomatic progress, tensions remain high. Gulf states have rejected Iranian efforts to control maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil and natural gas exports. Regional leaders fear that failure to secure a lasting deal could lead to another round of hostilities, especially as Israel continues to argue that further strikes may be necessary to curb Iran's capabilities.

Trump faces growing pressure at home as the conflict strains the United States economy and drives up global energy prices. While Gulf nations support negotiations, they also favor maintaining pressure on Tehran to ensure maritime security and address concerns over its nuclear programme, ballistic missiles, drones and allied armed groups.
