Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem renewed his rejection of calls from the United States, Israel, and the Lebanese government for the group to disarm, arguing that doing so would weaken Lebanon’s ability to defend itself against Israel. In a televised speech, he described Israel as an enemy seeking to expand its regional control and said any discussion of a defense strategy should only come after Israeli withdrawal, the release of prisoners, and the return of displaced residents.

Qassem accused the Lebanese government of failing to enforce the November 2024 ceasefire agreement with Israel and of making political concessions that undermine what he called the legitimacy of the resistance. He claimed the country lacks true political sovereignty and is effectively under American patronage.

Calling for dramatic action, Qassem urged citizens to take to the streets and topple the Lebanese government, despite Hezbollah holding two cabinet positions. He also rejected ongoing negotiations with Israel and expressed hope that talks between the United States and Iran would help bring a broader end to the conflict, including in Lebanon.
