Austrian police arrested one person on Sunday as three activists from a Gaza-bound flotilla returned to Vienna and were met by a loud demonstration from supporters at the airport. Video footage showed officers pushing a man to the ground and restraining him as crowds waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans. Police said they used 'proportionate force' after the group became disruptive and obstructed the terminal.
The arrested man later identified himself as former professional skier Julian Schutter, saying he was detained for being too loud and lying in the way. Similar scenes unfolded in Spain a day earlier, where four people were arrested during clashes at an airport in Bilbao as returning activists were welcomed home.
The confrontations followed Israel's interception of the flotilla last week, when 430 activists from 40 countries were detained and later deported. Organizers said the mission aimed to deliver humanitarian aid and challenge Israel's blockade of Gaza, while Israel described it as 'a publicity stunt at the service of Hamas.'
Several activists from different countries have alleged abuse, including sexual assault and beatings, during their detention. Israel's prison service has strongly denied the accusations, which have drawn international criticism and diplomatic tensions.
