The United States is preparing to press Lebanon to reconsider its longstanding law that criminalizes contact with Israel, as both sides head into a new round of talks in Washington. The legislation broadly bans Lebanese individuals and businesses from engaging with Israeli counterparts and carries penalties of up to 10 years in prison with hard labor, along with financial fines.

The discussions, held at the State Department, follow an initial round described as constructive and mark a rare diplomatic opening between the two countries. Israel will be represented by its ambassador to Washington, while Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has appointed diplomat Simon Karam to lead Lebanon's delegation.

Aoun framed the negotiations as a strategic choice aimed at securing a ceasefire, ending Israel's presence in southern Lebanon, and enabling the Lebanese army to deploy along the internationally recognized border. He described the talks as a potential turning point, presenting diplomacy as an alternative to continued conflict and expressing hope that the process could eventually lead to broader stability and restored sovereignty in the south.
