Dr. Yael Nemet, a 48-year-old math teacher and mother of five from Rehovot, enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces reserves after several members of her family were called up following the October 7 attacks. Initially, she helped establish a support center for reservists' families, but later decided to join the military herself, saying she felt a personal responsibility to contribute. She now serves as a service support officer in the Negev Brigade, assisting families of reservists.
At the same time, Nemet continues teaching at Amit Amichai Yeshiva, preparing her students for their upcoming math matriculation exams. Even while on base, she holds virtual lessons, reviews recorded assignments, and ensures no student falls behind. She says her mission in the classroom mirrors her service in uniform: strengthening the country through dedication and responsibility.
Under her leadership, more than half of the school’s students now qualify for the highest level of math studies, a dramatic rise from a decade ago. She also leads creative initiatives such as combining advanced math studies with long-distance running, dedicating the program to former students who fell in the war. For Nemet, promoting excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is as vital to the nation’s future as military service.
