Israel-Lebanon ceasefire extended for 45 days as peace talks continue

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ceasefire by 45 days following two days of talks in Washington, providing a temporary diplomatic breakthrough in a conflict that has continued to cause casualties despite the truce. The extension keeps the cessation of hostilities in place beyond its original expiry date while negotiations toward a long-term political agreement resume in early June, alongside separate security discussions between military officials.

The talks, described by the United States State Department as highly productive, aim to secure lasting peace, mutual recognition of sovereignty and stronger security arrangements along the shared border. Lebanese officials said the extension offers critical breathing room for civilians, while Israel’s representatives stressed that national security remains their top priority despite optimism about the negotiations.

Despite the diplomatic progress, violence has persisted. Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon and renewed drone and rocket attacks by Hezbollah underscored the fragility of the truce. Lebanese authorities reported civilian casualties from recent strikes, while Israel said it was targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure amid ongoing clashes that have killed thousands in Lebanon since March.

The ceasefire efforts are also linked to broader regional tensions involving Iran, Hezbollah’s main backer. Humanitarian officials have warned that conditions in southern Lebanon remain deeply alarming, though there is cautious hope that the renewed negotiations could eventually lead to a broader political settlement.
